STORY
Among the personal characteristics of Sultan Selim III, which stand out as well as his sultanship and decency, is that he is a poet, composer and calligrapher. Depending on economic, financial and political developments, during various periods of Selim III reign, there were partial reductions in the karat and dimensions of gold coins minted in his name. The Sultan’s practice of lowering the karat seen on gold coins was also reflected in the value of silver money. It is a silver coin in our museum belonging to the first year of Selim III accession to the throne.
