DESCRIPTION
On the silver coin minted in the name of Selim III, “السطان برین و خاقان بحرین السلطان بن السلطان ”(Sultanu’l-berreyn and hakanu’l-bahreyn Elsultan b. sultan) statement is written. It contains the signature of Sultan Selim III and the phrase “ضرب فی اسلامبول’’ (Darebe fi Islambol) on its back. ‘’Year 4’’ is also written since it was minted in the 4th year of the Sultan’s accession to the throne. The hole on it is not found in the original money.
STORY
Among the personal considerations of Selim III which stand out as well as his sultanship and decency, is that he is a poet, composer and calligrapher. Depending on economic, financial and political developments, partial reductions were made in the karat and dimensions of gold coins minted in his name during various periods of Selim III reign. The Sultan’s practice of lowering the karat seen on gold coins was also reflected in the value of silver money. The money exists in our museum is a silver coin belonging to the first year of the accession to the throne of Selim III.
