STORY
The phrase “عز نصره’’ began to be used on coins during the Mamluk Empire. It means, “Allah has blessed his help.’’ In addition, the main difference between Ottoman coins and Mamluk coins and previous periods in Egypt is that the inscriptions on Mamluk coins are often Quranic verses and religious expressions, while Ottoman coins do not have Quranic verses. This is because religious scholars of the Ottoman Empire banned the use of such coins on the grounds that not only Muslims but also non-Muslims could touch the verses of the Qur’an written on coins. Thus, earlier coins could not be used.
