Culture is a treasure left to us by the past. It is our duty to know the value of this treasure and to protect historical structures. The city of Kayseri has a very rich heritage in terms of historical structures. It is possible to come across different historical and cultural beauties in every corner. For this reason, we, as Erciyes College students, visited the Tol Church in the Talas district of Kayseri.
Tol Church is located on Harmanlar Street connected to Ali Saip Paşa Street. IV from the early Byzantine period. And it was formed as a rock carving in the 5th century. The entrance of the church consists of three sections with pointed arches and three apses.
The interior of the church is in the form of a large-volume corridor with pointed arches called tol. The interior consists of four sections of different sizes. Transition between spaces is provided through arched doors. The architectural texture in the direction of the apse was formed with a faceted stone.
From the first section, where the entrance is provided, the staircase leads to the gallery, where the middle nave can be viewed. It provides a connection with the middle nave in the other passage doors inside the church. Templon wall and bema elements do not exist today.
Tol Church, which is an example of a rock-carved sanctuary, which is one of the oldest religious buildings in the Cappadocia region, was put into service as of 2013 after the restoration works were completed by Talas Municipality.
